June 1, 2005 Wednesday we leave Stressa & Italy

Departing from Stresa, we went by private boat to Isola Bella. Here we enjoyed a guided visit of Borromeo Palace, built in 1670 by Count Vitaliano Borromeo, with villas its gorgeous terraced garden, obelisques, fountains and statues - all marvelous masterpieces of Baroque style. We had some free time to explore the garden. Then we cruised by Lake Maggiore's largest island, Isola Madre. This floating botanical garden boasts over 2,000 plant species, including subtropical flowers and ancient trees. The next short stop is romantic Isola Pescatori. This smallest of the Mottarone. Borromeo Island was the first to be inhabited. After admiring its cozy alleys, the little church of San Vittore, and marvelous views of the lake and other islands, we had lunch at a little cafe. Then we returned to Stresa by boat.

We went by bus to Lake Orta & the Island of St. Giulio. Originally called "Cusius'. Lake Orta is west of Lake Maggiore and is a highly concentrated area of fascinating local history and stunning hilly landscapes. It's rich in and ancient monuments, mainly of Romanesque and Baroque styles. We left Stresa by bus to Lake Orta about 20 minutes away. Once in Omegna, we boarded a local boat to the Island of St. Giulio, where there's a notable 4th-century basilica containing a wealth of art treasures. Next, we continued on by a boat trip to the village of Orta at the foot of the mountain. There were quaint, narrow streets lined with Renaissance and Baroque palaces and a lovely 16th-century "palazzotto" by the water. A final boat triptook us to S. Filiberto where we met our bus to go back to Stresa.
Stressa was a most delightful place to relax and explore. We ate in little sidewalk cafes and enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. Below I am talking to one of our Vantage guides, Simona. Below left is out fantastic Vantage Tour Guide Patrizia with Simona.
