Chapter 5
Everyone was in shock. The inky blackness was blacker than anything they had ever experienced. The blackness seemed to suck everything out of them.
Samuel could hear his heart pounding. Fear built in him in waves. He could hear one of the kids crying but he didn't know who. It reassured him to feel Ruth and Eli's hands in his. Their warmth seemed to be a comfort.
What would they do without the lamp? Now he knew what it must be like for Eli. He opened and shut his eyes and could not tell the difference.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" sobbed Peter.
Some of the other kids started saying hurtful things to Peter.
Ruth spoke up, "It was an accident, it could have happened to any of us. Leave Peter alone!"
Peter continued to sob, "I'm sorry."
"It's all right Peter. We've all got to be strong now," Ruth said gently.
"Can we get back by memory?" someone asked in the dark.
"No," came the reply, "we're not in the same passage we came in through. Anyway, the earthquake changed things so much, it wouldn't do any good even if we were."
"We'll never get out!" someone else sobbed.
"Stop that!" ordered Jacob. "We must remain calm and think this out."
"Now is the time to put our trust in Jesus," Said Samuel.
"Quiet!" It was Eli. "quiet, I think I hear something."
           "I don't Hear anything"
"Eli hears better than we do," Samuel pointed out. "That's one of the ways he gets around."
"Quiet!" Eli said again. Everyone got real quiet while Eli listened. "I hear wind. That means an opening to the outside."
            "Can you tell where?"
           "I can tell the direction."
Jacob said, "Eli you lead. Everybody hold hands. Don't let go for any reason."
Carefully Eli moved to the front, keeping hold of someone as he moved forward. The Kids knew the importance of keeping in physical touch with each other.
Eli started carefully forward, feeling his way forward. Everyone was quiet to allow Eli to hear the wind ahead. Slowly the little band groped their way through the darkness, tripping and stumbling, but keeping in touch.
"It seems to be getting closer," said Eli.
"I think I hear it also," one of the other kids said.
           "Me too!" another said excitedly.
"I hear a bird now," said Eli.
Suddenly Samuel shouted, "Light! Look there's light ahead!"
"We're safe!" A chorus of cheers went up. Now the light could easily be seem. A small hole was directly ahead. They started digging around it and soon it was large enough to crawl through.
The air was sweeter than Samuel ever believed it could be. Everyone was laughing and running around. The hot sun felt good after the dark coolness of the cave.
Suddenly Jacob stopped. He turned to Eli who was quietly standing beside Samuel and Ruth, his hands in theirs. He walked over to Eli and put his arm around him. Looking at Ruth he said, "Your prayers to Jesus worked. He let Eli lead us to safety."
He stood quietly for a minute, then said, "I guess he's not blind, he just sees differently."
